Trust Your Gut!

Recently I have come across several articles discussing the topic of trusting your gut when it comes to educational concerns for your children. Whether it is that initial feeling that your child may be struggling in school more than they should be or the feeling that your child is not receiving the support they need, trust your gut. Ask questions, seek information, speak with your child’s doctor, reach out to the school. If you are concerned with your child’s progress in school, be sure to address this early. Early intervention is key! The earlier a child begins to receive support and services, the sooner you question lack of progress, the better.

“Preschoolers can show early warning signs of dyslexia long before they start reading. That’s because dyslexia can affect a variety of language skills that are the building blocks for reading.”- Emily Lapkin, Understood.org

Many times schools will not recognize early warning signs and miss the opportunity to provide intervention in the early stages. Parents tell me time and time again, that they knew something was wrong, that their child seemed to be struggling more than their peers but they trusted the school to intervene and identify the issue. Some times school tell parents that a student can be evaluated in Kinder or 1st grade. This is not true. As a parent, you can request an evaluation at any time. The school must provide a written response agreeing to evaluate or providing the reason for not evaluating.
